Stainless Steel Slotted Pipe

With exceptional corrosion resistance and mechanical strength, stainless steel slotted pipe is designed for critical applications in groundwater extraction, oil production, and industrial wastewater drainage.

What is Stainless Steel Slotted Pipe?

By using hot or cold processing methods, multiple longitudinal slots are precisely cut into a stainless steel pipe to create a stainless steel slotted pipe. It mainly serves the extraction of various underground resources such as petroleum and groundwater, providing highly efficient performance on keeping sand off.

Compared with slotted casing pipe, stainless steel slotted pipes are primarily used for intercepting solid particles from water/oil flows rather than performing wellbore support. It can be designed with down to 0.10mm slot widths for finer separation, with diverse slot arrangement patterns to accommodate different flow rate needs.

Product by Slot Shape

Stainless steel slot pipes can be sorted into the following three types by slot shape. You may select the appropriate pipe according to your requirements.

Straight rectangular slots feature uniform width, making them ideal for applications requiring high particle uniformity.

    Trapezoid / Keystone Slot
Trapezoid slots are narrower outside and wider inside, which stops particle jamming, great for wells prone to sand production.

Stainless Steel Slotted Pipe Benefits

Stainless steel slotted pipe combines the dual advantages of stainless steel material and slotted pipe, offering multiple long-term, reliable benefits.

Corrosion Resistance

Entire stainless steel construction makes it perform very well in various corrosive environments.

High Heat Resistance

Highly resistant to cracking, even operating in high-temp environments for extended periods.

Burr-free Finishing

Standard laser cutting technology allows slots in precise sizes with burr-free edges.

Extended Longevity

Proper material and size selections support its deployment for at least 10 years or longer.

Chemical Compatibility

Without chemical migration from the stainless body, ensuring safety of extracted resources.

Excellent Strength

A robust structure provides high strength and lower deformation risks under pressure conditions.

High Pressure Resistance

High structural strength and uniform stress distribution enable it to withstand high pressure.

Low Pressure Drop

Large open area means low pressure drop, which can effectively deal with sudden unstable flow.

Distribution Types of Slots

There are mainly three distribution types of stainless steel slotted pipe’s slots: straight, staggered, and gang pattern.

  • Straight Pattern

Slots run parallel to the pipe, with multiple slots arranged in parallel. This design is simple to manufacture, cost-effective, and well-suited for short sections and vertical wells.

  • Staggered Pattern

Single slots are arranged in a staggered or checkerboard pattern, providing a high open area and excellent clog resistance, making them ideal for medium-flow applications.

  • Gang Pattern

Multiple slots are arranged in a staggered pattern, which bears higher torque, is suitable for high-flow applications, and does not deform at high temperature.

Stainless Steel Slotted Pipe Applications

SS 304 slotted pipes are generally used for groundwater collection, while 316L constructions are more suitable for a variety of strongly corrosive environments.

Water Wells

Iron and rust will not seep into the well, and the narrow and even slots can ensure a good flow of water collection.

Outstanding corrosion and high-temperature resistance make it highly reliable in the harsh environments of SAGD wells.

Slot Profiles of Stainless Steel Slotted Pipe

Slot profiles of stainless steel slotted pipes come in two forms: straight slot and keystone slot.

Visual example of Straight Slot.

Straight slots maintain consistent width from outer to inner edges, offering greater wear resistance and lower manufacturing costs than keystone slots. They are typically used in cold production wells, SAGD injector wells, and CBM horizontal wells.

Visual example of Keystone Slot.

Keystone slots widen progressively from the outer to the inner edges, resembling an inverted V-shape. Sand will not get stuck in the slots, preventing clogging and thereby enhancing filtration efficiency. They are ideal for oil and gas wells, water wells, and geothermal wells.

1.What are the Common Materials of Stainless Steel Slotted Pipe and How to Choose?

Common stainless steel materials include 304, 304L, 316, 316L, and 904L. 304 does not contain molybdenum, while 316 does. Therefore, 316 offers superior corrosion resistance.

304 works well in most freshwater and soil environments and can be made into an economical general-purpose well. 316 is more resistant to chloride corrosion, making it better for seawater use and offshore drilling.

304L or 316L has low carbon content, preventing carbon precipitation and embrittlement during welding. For applications requiring welding, 304L and 316L are recommended. For extreme corrosion environments, 904L or Super Duplex (2507) delivers the highest performance.

2.When Should Stainless Steel Slotted Pipes Be Used Instead of Stainless Steel Screen Pipes?

When formation sand is coarse (greater than 0.3 mm), low in fines and clay reservoirs, or well productivity is low and economic viability cannot support the use of screen pipes, or in deep wells or high-stress conditions, slotted pipes should be prioritized over screen pipes.

3.Are Stainless Steel Slotted Liners and Stainless Steel Slotted Pipes the Same? What are the Differences?

These two terms actually refer to the same type of pipes. However, slotted liners are commonly used in water wells, oil wells, monitoring wells, and similar applications. Slotted pipes are a more general term with a broader range of applications, for underground drainage and process filtration.
