Candle filters are simple device made out of a clay and used to filter drinking water in order to remove turbidity, suspended materials and pathogens. Removal takes place by physical process such as mechanical trapping and adsorption on the ceramic candles, which have micro-scale pores.

- Filling: the slurry is passed through pump from the bottom into the filter vessel. The upward flow helps keep the solids in suspension thereby depositing it evenly on the surface of the candle filter cartridges
- Pre-coating: the suspension is circulated through candle filter elements to produce a porous precoat layer
- Filtration: the filter cake is formed on the outside of the filter candle while the transparent filtrate is discharged from the inside of the candles through the header. The candle can form a cake raging from 5 to 25mm thick.
- Cake washing: the wash liquid follows the same route as in the filtration process. Cakes can be washed or rearranged in one or more stages.
- Cake drying: cake can be heated and dried in the vessel by using hot gases, such as steam, air or nitrogen.
- Cake discharge: discharging of the dry cake is by gentle gas expansion of the filter element, where gas is purged backwards through the filter, which pushes the dry cake off the filter surface.
There are many factors affecting the candle filter such as: nature of the solution to be filtered, solid liquid ration, number of candle filter elements and so on. After certain time normal filtering, the cake thickness is increasing to high level, the filter speed is slow down and the filtering efficiency is decreased.
