What is Polyether Foam?

Filson polyether foam is also called ether foam, ether-based polyurethane foam, polyether polyurethane foam or polyether urethane foam. By mixing a foaming agent, polyether polyols and a catalyst, the formed free-rising frothquickly solidifies to polyether foam within minutes.

To increase or enhance certain properties, a range of different additives can be added to polyether foam during the manufacturing process.For example, some of the common additives include flameretardant, anti-static additives, electrostatic dissipative additives and so on.

As a widely used material in many industries, polyether foam safety is what everyone concerns about. To figure out whether polyether foam is toxic or not, let’s start with this question, what is polyether foam is made of.

Polyether foam is a high-molecular polymer fabricated by mixing methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI), toluene diisocyanate (TDI) and polyols with foaming agent and some catalysts. After being heated and sprayed, the mixture forms foamy and rising forth that solidify within minutes. Once formed, it is a stable and non-irritated material.

Thus it can be considered safe during daily usage for consumers. But there are some potential hazards in the manufacturing process. As some volatile organic compounds in the polyether foam may be released into the air in vapor form, posing dangers to humans.

But don’t worry too much. By providing proper ventilation and air filtration systems and applying protective measures, like gloves, goggles and overalls, the hazards caused by harmful TDI or MDI vapors can be minimized.

Polyester VS Polyether Foam

Polyester and polyether foam are the two main types of polyurethane foam. But the properties between them can vary.

  • Physical Properties

Abrasion:Polyester foam has high sliding abrasion resistance. Polyether foam shows better impingement abresion resistance.

Heat Resistance: Both of them can hold up well at high temperature. Polyester foam can tolerate high heat longer and is better at heat aging resistance. Polyether foam is less prone to dynamic heat build-up.

Low Temperature Resistance: The brittle point of polyester foam is between -40°C to -73°C. Polyether foam is less susceptible to cold temperatures.

Hardness: They are available in a vast range of hardness, from being soft like cotton to solid like hard rubber.

Rebound: As for the rebound, polyether foam is higher than polyester foam.

Shock Absorption: Polyester foam is more suitable for cushioning and vibration dampening applications than polyether foam.

  • Resistance

Cut and Tear Resistance: Polyester foam is more resistant to cutting and tearing and has higher tensile strength.

Moisture and Water Resistance: Polyether foam has better hydrolytic stability and is more suitable for applications in moisture environments.

Chemical Resistance: Polyester foam offers higher resistance to aggressive chemical. Thus it is more suitable for contact with oil, fuel, solvents, vapors, etc.
