What is Polyester Foam?

Filson polyester foam is a high-molecular compound, mainly PET, formed by polycondensation of polyol and polyacid as the main raw materials. With various additives such as foaming agent, catalyst, flame retardant, etc., it is mixed by special equipment and foamed by high-pressure spraying.

Due to an open cell structure and three-dimensional skeletal strand structure, Filson polyester foam is more permeable to moisture and stable at high temperatures. Being suitable for low compression conditions, it can be used when softness and compliance are required.

What is PPI?

PPI is the abbreviation of pores per inch, indicating the quantities of cells in the polyester foam per inch. Polyester foam has reticulated and open cell structure. When magnified with a microscope, the cells can be seen.

The larger the cells, the lower the PPI and the stiffer the polyester foam. On the contrary, the smaller the cells, the higher the PPI and the softer the polyester foam. The more the quantities of cells per inch, the finer and smoother the polyester foam and the less likely it is to chip off.

The standard PPI ranges from 10 to 80. PPI 10 shows large cells and is open, while PPI 80 has small cells, is more dense, and enables a restricted airflow to go through.

Is Polyester Foam toxic?

Polyester is a high-molecule polymer formed by polycondensation of polyols and polyacids. After high-pressure spraying, it forms an inert and harmless polyester foam, which is considered to be not harmful to the environment and consumers.

However, foaming agents are often used in the manufacturing process of polyester foam. Some of the foaming agents may produce toxic gases or residues that will stay in the foam and may have the possibility of being released over time.

But the good news is that nowadays, polyester foam can be produced following FDA and ROHS standards. Together with the usage of natural foaming agents like water, polyester foam can be safely made and be innocuous to the environment, machine operators, and users.

Is Polyester Foam Sound Proof?

Yes, polyester foam is an outstanding soundproofing material. Due to some unique properties, polyester foam can carry out soundproofing effectively. Let’s find it out together.

  • Density refers to the mass quantity per volume of a substance. It is a measure of the extent to which the molecules of a material are arranged together. To be sound proof, a material has to be within the suitable range of density. If the density is high enough, the sound waves will be damped. If the density is low enough, the sound waves will be absorbed. However, if the density of the material is too high or too low, the sound waves can transmit through the material and be reflected off the surface of the material respectively.
  • The porosity of a material can be measured by PPI which is pores per inch, indicating the number of cells in the foam per inch. When sound waves transmit through these cells, they will lose momentum because the interstices of cells can change their energy by expansion, compression, and change in the direction of flow.
  • Flow resistivity. Flow resistivity is the flow resistance to noise per unit thickness of a material. It is the most important feature of a sound absorber. The resistivity depends on the tapers of the sound waves.
  • Cell size. To be qualified for soundproofing, the unit cell size of the material has to be small enough. It is demanded that the unit cell size of the material should be smaller than the wavelength of the sound that it is going to absorb or block. How the cells are arranged is also very important. As open cell structure is beneficial to absorb sound waves and closed cell structure is prone to block sound waves.
  • In the cell arrangement of a material, tortuosity is the measure of the twists and turns. The more tortuosities the better. As the sound waves have to pass through more bends, they lose more momentum.

What is the Principle and Application of Flame Retarding Polyester Foam?

Flame retarding polyester foam is also called fireproof polyester foam. Generally, it is a fireproof material synthesized by adding flame retardants to various polyesters. The main raw materials are flame retardants, isocyanates, polyethers, polyols, and so on.

The flame retarding effect of polyester foam is compliant with the CA117 standard, and the using method is the same as that of ordinary polyester foam. The production processes of flame retarding polyester foam commonly include raw material preparation, freezing, stirring, foaming, drying, and cutting.

Flame retarding polyester foam is mainly used in decoration, car accessories, wall sound absorption, thermal insulation pipes, fire doors and fire shutters, and more.
