Micro Drum Filter
Primarily used in the final stage of wastewater treatment, micro drum filter can effectively reduce COD, BOD5, TSS, NH3-N, TN, TP from wastewater and upgrade effluent standard, meeting stricter standards for receiving water bodies or enabling wastewater reuse.
What Is a Micro Drum Filter?
Micro drum filter, also called microscreen drum filter, is specially used for advanced wastewater treatment to help you intercept 10–20 μm suspended particulates and colloidal matter. It features a fully enclosed tank design with inlet, outlet and drain (dirty outlet) ports, no submerged sections.
This ultra-fine mesh size design necessitates that TSS (Total Suspended Solids) < 30mg/L in the incoming water to ensure its drum screen doesn’t become clogged too quickly. Plus, due to the typical high flow design (large diameter + long length of drum), its drum screen can be designed in a segmented style for easy disassembly, cleaning, and replacement at any time.
Micro Drum Filter Features
Our micro drum filters stand out with their unique advantages, including compact design, stable operation, easy maintenance, excellent filtration, and more.

Fully enclosed design effectively isolates odors, enabling indoor installation; also, the sealed cover blocks photosynthesis, thereby effectively preventing algae growth during your operation, ensuring better quality of outlet water.

Can be equipped with ultra-fine mesh screens featuring micron-level apertures as small as 10 – 20 μm. This characteristic makes them an ideal choice for the final stage of wastewater treatment, ensuring effluent meets strict environmental regulations.

Segmented screen design lets you replace only the damaged sections without needing to replace the entire drum. Also, the replacement procedure is simple and easy to operate, no specialized equipment or tools are required.

Equipment operates continuously with an automatic start/stop switch inside; drum rotation is controlled by signals from a liquid level sensor. Or PLC control can be selected for drum rotation and backwashing, without manual management.

Equipped with overload protection devices and procedures at all stages to promptly contain hazards within manageable limits during short-circuit incidents and motor overloads. Electrical components inside the enclosure are Schneider or equivalent brands.

Smaller installation spaces are required compared with other conventional filtration systems at the same flow rate level. Not only saves space, but it also facilitates regular management, reducing manual time and costs.
Working Principle of Micro Drum Filter
- Step 1: Water enters drum, level sensor sends a signal;
- Step 2: Drive system is activated to rotate the drum;
- Step 3: Backwashing pump is started at the same time;
- Step 4: Wastewater flows into the drum and passes screen;
- Step 5: Solids remain on the inner surface of drum screen;
- Step 6: Solids are discharged from drain pipe by backwashing;
- Step 7: Normal filtration continues concurrently with backwashing;
- Step 8: Drum stops automatically when no water passing through.

Backwashing System Design
Backwashing system comprises a backwash pump, flushing water pipes, nozzle system, sludge collection tank, and drainage pipeline. It functions by using a pump to draw the filtered water and spray it with high pressure, flushing the drum screens from the outside in.
Thus suspended solids which accumulated on the screen surfaces are rinsed away, bringing the screens back to life. Grundfos pumps are often utilized for our micro drum filters, or other equivalent brands, as you request.

A micro drum filter includes five core components: the frame, filter drum, drive system, cleaning system, and automatic control system. Together, they ensure stable screening and continuous operation.
Yes, you can. Micro drum filters use modular and segmented filter panels, which can be easily detached, swapped out, and reassembled right on-site. There is no need to take the entire drum apart at all.
During replacement, simply rotate the drum to position the target screen section above the water level, then shut down the equipment. No special tools or lifting equipment are required. Trained operators can quickly and safely replace the screen panels on-site.
In most wastewater treatment systems, you can install a micro drum filter right after primary separation units such as clarifiers or DAF systems. These pre-treatment devices first capture and remove the majority of larger solid particles, enabling the micro drum filter to perform finer screening in subsequent stages.
After passing through a micro drum filter, water typically enters biological treatment processes such as activated sludge systems, moving bed biofilm reactors (MBBR), or membrane bioreactors (MBR), depending on the treatment objectives.
In practical applications, micro drum filters are specifically designed for solids particle removal and are not recommended for removing oils, greases, or dissolved contaminants. Oils and greases will permeate or adhere to the drum screen mesh and cannot be retained. Dissolved contaminants are too small to be captured by the filter media.
If you need to treat this type of wastewater, Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) is recommended. Alternatively, the micro drum filter can be employed as a pretreatment unit preceding the DAF process.
Yes, they can. You can install multiple micro drum filters in parallel to handle higher flow rates. A flow distributor is usually used to split the incoming water evenly across all units. This configuration also means you can take one of the devices offline for maintenance without shutting down the entire system.
